For the last few years there has been un-presented squeezing and arm-twisting of Voluntary sector in India. Not only have the genuine organizations faced arbitrary harassment by number of enforcement agencies, but government has also come out with many restrictive laws and regulations. The primary question is that, till date the sector has been on the receiving end, now what should we do to put forward our views in front of government, donor, media and policy makers. These strategies could be long term as well as short term. How all of us can create synergy by pooling our individual, institutional expertise and resources together.

In order to discuss the challenges and what should be the strategy or way forward for the sector VANI had organised a half day discussion session for seniors leaders from the sector. The Meeting was organised on 5th August, 2010 at the conference room, NFI in Delhi and was attended by 16 participants. The discussions were full of experiences and suggestions from the participants. The discussions were focused around three main questions:-

  • Challenges faced by the Voluntary Sector in current times?
  • The Strategy framework to deal with these Challenges as a Sector?
  • The role of VANI, being the apex body of VOs in dealing with these Challenges and the contribution that can be made by the other stakeholders?

Since the volume of these challenges is large and varied, VANI would like to take this initiative further and seek opinions some senior leaders. After which these opinions and thoughts would be collated together in building a way forward and strategic approach to tackle these challenges.
